Munich Security Conference 2021 - John McCain Dissertation Award - Call for Nominations

The John McCain Dissertation Award is awarded annually to up to two outstanding doctoral dissertations for exceptional academic contributions in the field of political science, history or policy analysis with an emphasis on transatlantic relations — including its security, technological, political, trade and financial, social and cultural dimensions. The award has several components, including participation in Munich Security Conference (MSC) events and a first prize grant of 10,000 Euros.

Excellent doctoral dissertations written in English or German on any aspect of transatlantic relations are eligible for consideration for the McCain Award. Dissertations must have been successfully defended between November 1, 2019 and October 31, 2020 in order to be eligible for the 2021 award. In keeping with Senator McCain’s legacy, preference will be given to dissertations with a primary focus on an essential and important element of transatlantic relations, clear policy implications, and an innovative, rich and rigorous research design.

The selection process will be led by an expert jury which includes Eugénia da Conceicão-Heldt (Hochschule für Politik München/TUM School of Governance), Carlo Masala (University of the Federal Armed Forces), Berthold Rittberger (Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science, LMU Munich), Trine Flockhart (University of Southern Denmark), Stephanie Hofmann (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies), Andrew Moravcsik (Princeton University) and Mark Green (McCain Institute).

Nominations need to include a support letter by a supervisor or member of the thesis committee, a pdf copy of the full dissertation, an executive summary of no more than two pages and a brief academic CV. Self-nominations are not possible. Entries are to be mailed to mccainaward@securityconference.de no later than December 1, 2020.

TSA Lisbon - Conference Cancellation

Statement on TSA 2020 Annual Conference

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, and the outlook for the coming months, the TSA Management Committee has taken the decision to cancel the TSA 2020 conference in Lisbon. This step was taken with great sadness, but there was unanimity on the Management Committee that this was the right decision in the circumstances.

If you have booked travel and accommodation for the 2020 conference in Lisbon, please cancel these as soon as possible.

We are particularly disappointed to have to cancel this year’s conference, given the tremendous response we received to the call for papers. We have surpassed TSA records and evaluated many fine paper and panel proposals. We are particularly grateful to all who served on the Conference Programme Committee that did so much to generate enthusiasm for the 2020 conference. The local organising committee at ISCTE have done excellent work laying preparations for the conference, and we are particularly grateful to Luís Nuno Rodrigues for leading this effort.

Accepting papers and panels towards TSA 2021

We are determined to build on the positive momentum established towards the 2020 conference. As a first step towards this goal, the Management Committee has agreed to honour acceptances of papers and panels submitted for the 2020 conference for the TSA conference in 2021, should those concerned wish to attend. Acceptance letters will be emailed shortly. Further details concerning the TSA 2021 conference will be announced in due course.

We would like to thank all those who worked towards what we are sure would have been a very successful and enjoyable conference in Lisbon, as well as everyone who showed such enthusiasm for joining us in this endeavour.

Please stay in touch with the TSA through our website and Twitter account as we work towards future events. Many of our activities (including the TSA-Cambridge University Press book prize and the new TSA-Palgrave-Macmillan Research Award) will continue this year as normal.

With best wishes in these most trying of times,

Professor Chris Jespersen (TSA Chair)
Dr Thomas Mills (TSA Vice-Chair)
Dr Kristin Cook (TSA Secretary)
